Pleasant surprises while shopping
I had to go shopping today. I’m having my whole family over on Mother’s Day. I’m making a pork tenderloin so I went to Sam’s Club. They have a double pack of plain pork tenderloin that I can season as I want.
If you’ve never been in a Sam’s Club before, let me tell you the first time I went shopping there after being gluten free, it made me mad. The place is filled with “food ladies” as I call them. “Would you like to try some blah, blah, blah?” That’s like a land mind for the gluten intolerant. I had to say no to everything.
In our local Sam’s, they are around every corner. I try to avoid them. I was almost done with my shopping today and was at the cheese area where I had avoided two of them already. There was one lady with her table and back to me so I sneaked around behind her looking at the cheese trying to find something for Mother’s Day. I was stressing myself a little because I was thinking I was going to have to make a special trip to find some gluten free crackers to go with the cheese I was buying.
As I came around the other side of the cheese counter and up towards the side of her, I noticed my husband reading the box the food lady had out. I could hear him say, “I think my wife might be able to eat this.” I was thinking he was crazy. All I could see was whole grain from a distance.
I came over to look at the box and realized it was a rice cracker and the box said gluten free! Geeze, I got so excited. And the food lady was serving it with Laughing Cow cheese. I actually got to eat something the food lady was serving! Way. Cool. I bought two boxes. Crackers for cheese crisis was solved. No special trip for crackers needed! And, they were darn good!
These crackers are made by Crunchmaster. I have heard mixed reviews on the internet about the fact they are made in a facility that also uses wheat. On the box it says less than 100 parts per million. It seems as if some think that is not low enough and it should be less than 20 parts per million. So, buy at your own risk. I am trying them. We’ll see.

Then I went to Walmart. I usually have trouble finding a gluten free, healthy chicken broth. I don’t like a bunch of chemicals in my chicken broth. There on the shelf they had Rachel Ray Stock in a Box. And right on the side the words, gluten free. Again, way cool. Thank you, Rachel.

On the way home, I had to stop at Kroger’s. Yes, I was in every grocery store on the southside of Indianapolis today! I was hoping to find a vinegar similar to the one I get at Trader Joe’s. No such luck at Walmart, so I thought I’d give Kroger’s a try. No luck there either, but I found a salad dressing with gluten free on the label. So I had to buy it. Just because. It was good too!

I don’t know about you all, but I get so excited when I see gluten free on a label. I think my week is ending on an upswing. It didn’t start out to well.
Steve bought me an elliptical and it’s defective. It has to be exchanged. We bought a sofa a couple weeks ago and was told the color we wanted was on back order. So after weeks of waiting, on Tuesday my new sofa was being delivered. The delivery guy was walking in the house with a cushion and I noticed it was the wrong color. It was green. I ordered beige! He asked me if I was sure. Like I wouldn’t know the difference between ordering green or beige. Hmmmm. No comment.
So come to find out, the reason we had to wait several weeks was because they had keyed in the wrong color. They had my color in stock all along. Hopefully my new sofa will be sitting in my living room by next Tuesday. I have high hopes because my week is getting better!
I have my menu ready for Mother’s Day and hopefully, tomorrow I will have some pictures and recipes posted. That is if I’m not too tired after cooking all day. I am making as much as I can tomorrow so Sunday will be less stressful. The potato salad I make is better the second day anyway.
Here is my menu:
Pork tenderloin
Cesar potato salad
Sue’s beans
Cranberry walnut slaw
Crescent rolls
Millet bread
Swedish Pinnapple cake

Sounds like you’ve got Mother’s Day taken care of.
Regarding the chips, the proposed FDA definition of gluten-free is less than 20 parts per million. This will be cemented in August of this year (I’m pretty sure). Crunch master will no longer be able to label these crackers gluten-free, unless they can prove there is less than 20 ppm.

Thanks Cassandra! That is good information to have. I hope I don’t feel bad eating them. I have a feeling a lot of things labeled as gluten free may change because of that law since so many things are made in facilities that also produce wheat items.

Melanie,
I share the excitement with you. I jump for joy, well, not literally, but….when I find a product that has gluten free on the label. Just yesterday my assistant showed me Yoplait(I think)and the words were as plain as day! I go to Sams also and experience the same feeling, watching everyone sample the goodies. Our day will come!!!
P.S. Garden is coming along…the cilantro never grew but the rest is going fine!

Hi Melanie,
I had a recent cracker crisis, too. I’d been eating Sesmark Rice Thins. They aren’t marked gluten free, but the only ingredients are rice , safflower oil and salt. The first two packs were fine. But my third pack made me a little sick. Hmmm. Turns out they are made in a factory that processes wheat, and they don’t test for gluten. Rats! These are about half the price of the Edward & Sons Organic Brown Rice Snaps.
Oh well, better safe than sorry.
Kroger has a very reasonable organic chicken broth, under their Private Selection label.

Melanie - I am with you - I get so excited whenever I see something labeled gluten free. If I have two products in my hand, and one is labeled gluten free and the other isn’t, then I always buy the one marked gluten free, even if it’s more money. I’m a firm believer in supporting companies that label their items gluten free.

Ditto what Steve said. When GF is on the label, it goes faster into my shopping cart. Thanks for the tip on the crackers, I will have to check them out! Now to find someone with a Sam’s card…..

I would have been tickled with that day, too!
Like you, I avoid the food ladies in one upscale grocery store I visit.
Although 20 ppm is what the FDA is going to for GF, the Gluten Free Certification Organization (GFCO) of the Gluten Intolerance Group requires 10 ppm to be certified by them (and they require spot inspections throughout the process … it’s not just a one-time thing). Interestingly enough, in a letter to the FDA about the proposed standards, GIG stated: “Based on plant inspections by GFCO and FSI in the USA, we have identified at least two (2) large producers of gluten-free flours (primarily rice), which we feel would not be able to meet the requirements of the proposed gluten-free labeling rule. (Full text available at http://www.gluten.net/downloads/GF%20FDA%20comment.doc) The new GF labeling will be interesting in many ways. Frankly, I am still concerned about it. It bothers me that something that contains barley can be labeled gluten free if it’s 20 ppm or less and never show barley in the ingredients … only wheat has to be shown per the existing laws.
I eat the Blue Diamond Nut Thin crackers. They say gluten free, too, although I understand they are produced in a non-dedicated facility. I have had no issues.
It’s good to know about the Rachel Ray chicken broth! Just FYI, Better than Bouillon, which is a soup base that you spoon out and mix with boiling water, is gluten free and is wonderful. It’s so easy to have on hand in the fridge and make broth. I go through several jars of the chicken each year. They also have ham, vegetable, and clam (great for homemade chowder), etc.
Maple Grove Farms also has a GF pancake mix that is really good.

Hey Melanie - I want to thank you for this post.
I haven’t been online much in the last week or so because work is a bit wild… but I logged in about the time you psted this and saw the cracker package. I made a mental note to come back to read more - but we were off running errands, etc.
One of our stops was Costco…where, when walking quickly by the normally VERBOTEN crackers, I spied THE SAME box from your blog. I just about ran smack into to someone behind me as I did and about-face and grabbed my love (he was pushing the cart) by the arm.
Needless to say I am now the proud muncher of some seriously hardy new whole-grain crackers thanks to YOU!
You ROCK, Melanie!
Thank you!

Kate, That is hilarious! I can just picture it in my head! Must get to the crackers NOW!
To you and Faye, Kay, Steve, Ginger and Shirley, the good thing about being gluten free is, we really appreciate those simple things in life now. You know, everyone else (gluten eaters) are the one’s who are really missing out! They are eating food and not appreciating it. We can so much appreciate when we have found something we enjoy. That is a blessing!

Oh, and if any of you buy these crackers, please let me know if you feel like you have any reaction to them because of the 100 ppm.

What happy surprises!!! I love when those things happen
Too bad about your sofa, that stinks!
